In the great tradition of OSU animal research, A. Courtney DeVries, will add 120 White-footed mice to her wound healing in mice protocol. (October 10, 2003) The mice are added to investigate another species. There are about 53 subspecies of Genus Peromyscus based upon the continuing approval of ILACUC this experiment could last forever. Below is a white-footed mouse outside of the OSU laboratory.

02A0146 - Modification of Wound Healing - Pain Code = 3E
The protocol, 02A0146, was initially approved to use 180 California mice and 60 Cactus mice.
The animals are in a restraint tube 2 hours per day for eleven days. There will be no preconditioning of the animal since stress is the intended consequence of the restraint. A skin biopsy is performed and the wound healing time is measured. This is another protocol where pain and/or distress to the animal is NOT relieved, pain code 3E.

Deer Mouse ------------------ Cactus Mouse
On May 9, 2003 an additional 120 Cactus Mice. The mice are approved because the PI is expanding the species used in the experiments.
Another paper published: SOCIAL BENEFITS OF WOUND HEALING MAY NOT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE IN ANIMALS WITH MULTIPLE PARTNER. And what is the solution - MORE DRUGS - their conclusion:
"With humans, it can be difficult to alter someone's social conditions, to get people to bond with others. If we could identify a mechanism by which social interaction helps wound heal, then we might be able to provide a pharmacological aid to facilitate healing in socially isolated people and other individuals at risk."
