2004A0108 - Social Structure and Housing Influence Physiology & Behavior in Mice - A. Courtney DeVries
Pain Code = 3E
1,280 Mice (640 m/f White-footed mouse and 640 m/f California mouse)

The ILACUC committee asked to "verify that duplicative work is not being performed."

Answer: "The proposed studies are an extension of the experiments conducted under protocol 02A0146 and seek to define the mechanism underlaying social facilitation of wound healing. The proposed studies are not duplicative; For, depressive behaviors and immune parameters have not been assessed in the context of the social facilitation of wound healing."

Restraint of the animals in a plexiglas tube. Limited to 3 hrs per day for no more than 21 days. There will be no preconditioning of the animal since stress is the intended consequences of the restraint.

California Mouse

From the lay abstract:

"It is well documented that exposure to stressful or noxious stimuli impairs immune function and impacts wound healing in humans and animals."

YES, we know because of human studies have been conducted at OSU. And for some reason animal studies also continue at OSU. It's time to STOP.

Additional approval for 32 deer mice "to further investigate how differences in social structure and housing affect physiological mechanisms of behavior" 10/22/04.
