2004A0188 - Developmental Stress and Gene Expression in Mice - Randy J.
Nelson
Pain Code = 2E
144 Mice (24 breeders with 120 offspring - only 96 offspring will be
used in the experiment. The other 24 animals will be killed.)
By stressing these mice prenatal/neonatal Nelson hopes to understand how stress before and shortly after birth "may affect the number of genes responsible for the growth of the skeleton." This is because we don't already know that a pregnant women's exposure to stress has effects on the offspring.
"The stress condition will be prolonged cold exposure that is known to induce morphological and behavioral changes in the offspring. Specifically, the stressed females will be removed from their cages and placed in a room at 10 degrees C during gestatiopn and lactation. The low temperature chosen in this experiment is in conformity with the natural conditions of the breeding season in wild mice."
