2008A0209 - Islet Isolation and Allotransplantation in Non-Human Primates
This protocol is a renewal of 2002A0162. Between 2002-2008, sixtytwo (62) primates were used in this experiment. From the latest records, 9/03/08, P.O.E.T. has received, five (5) primates remain alive.
2008A0209 will use 59 macaques and 276 mice. The pain code is 4D.
While the title indicates allotransplantation atleast 10 primates will receive pig islets, therefore some are xenotransplants. The pig islets are taken from pigs used in other protocols after euthanasia.
Many of the experiments are a duplication of experiments previously conducted under 2002A0162. Those include treatment with Exenatide, allo (same species) islet transplants with treatment & without treatment, and total pancreatectomy with treatment & without treatment. A review of animal records from the 2002 protocol will show you that a horrible death awaits those animals receiving no treatment.
When the protocol is received more information will follow.
During the November IACUC protocol review meeting some issues were noted and required further information before full approval was given to begin these experiments.
