World Laboratory Animal Liberation Week, 2008 – April 20th – 26th

Thursday, April 24th on The Ohio State University campus - A March to Remember the Animals

When & Where: 4:00 pm - Neil & 11th - in the grassy area next to Hamilton Hall. Discussion concerning cat intubation. http://www.poetwill.org/cat_intu.htm

"Virtually every medical school in the U.S. has abandoned the use of ferrets and cats to teach neonatal intubation. Simulators such as Laerdal’s BabySim and METI’s SimBaby are used extensively for just this purpose. This is a gratuitous use of animals where superior non-animal tools exist." John J. Pippin, M.D., F.A.C.C., Senior Medical and Research Adviser, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

4:30 pm - March down 12th Ave. to Wiseman Hall.

Some of the experiments conducted in Wiseman Hall include:

George Billman running dogs treadmills and inducing a heart attack. The question - Will omega-3 help your heart. Don't we know the answer.

John Buford having primates develop carpal tunnel syndrome. A new protocol was recently approved to create diabetic primates and investigate carpal tunnel.

Amer Rajab investigating islet transplantation in diabetic induced primates. http://www.poetwill.org/02A0162_rajab_primates.htm

Chandan K Sen approval to use 75 dogs to "evaluate the potential of vitamin E and its analogs to protect against stroke damage, on the basis of the anti-oxidant activity of these agents" in the dog's brain. http://www.poetwill.org/2006A0248_sen.htm

Continue down 12th to the Biomedical Research Tower. The ground breaking took place October 2, 2003 and a grand opening took place November 6, 2006. For a variety of reasons it took another year for animals to begin moving into tower. And when animals were moved into the BRT, well here's an amendment approved by IACUC in January 2008.

02A0035 - Novel Treatment of Vestibular Schwannomas in the Mouse Xenograft Model - D. Bradly Welling

"As well 5 mice died since the move from Wiseman to the Biomedical Research Tower. There is concern that their deaths may have been related to the move?"

The BRT is a major home of transgenic mice. Transgenic experiments in general, attempt to create an animal model. by turning on/off genes hoping to replicate human cancers and/or disease. But what does it take to get a mouse model. Here are three examples from experiments being conducted inside the BRT.

Continue down 12th and walk over to the Drake Union where we'll cross the pedestrian bridge and finish at the Veterinary College.

OSU is doing there best to keep the resumption of the Cats-On-Meth experiments a secret. Saying "cells will be used - cells will be used" however, Lawrence Mathes recently submitted a protocol renewal and the experiments to infect cats with FIV, binge them of methamphetamine, and the new twist give some of the cats AZT was approved. We know he has cats that could be used at any time for these experiments so tracking whether the experiment has started or not is difficult. Our feeling is that the experiment itself is flawed, a waste of animal life, and again a waste of taxpayer dollars. Pressure must begin again to halt this experiment.
