ILACUC Highlighs for January 2003
The year begins with the approval of 14 new protocols ( 1 "E" category ) and approval of 13 amendments to currently active protocols, some active back to 1997. The amendments increase the animals being used at OSU by:
300 rabbits, 280 hamsters, 750 rats, 54 frogs, and 610 mice.
Read the chart on the main OSU Research page for 2003 animal numbers.
New Protocols
03A0004 - Novel Irreversible Nonsteroidal SARMs for Prostate Cancer - James
T Dalton - Pain Code=2E
1920 mice were approved for usage. There are toxicity studies which will use
LD10 for results.
03A0014 - Pharmacology Course 793 - William W Muir
This is an instructional protocol which will use 6 dogs.
The rationale for using animals is "Alternative methods are not available for studying the complex responses to the drugs to be tested and do not provide the technical experience of live animal preparation. There are no alternative methods. The parameters we measure are not found in a computer program."
The course "is intended to demonstrate to Veterinary Graduate Students what differences occur in heart rate, atterial blood pressures and other vital measurements when giving the patient different pharmacologic drugs. The drugs given will be Dopamine (1-5 ug/kg/min IV), Dobutamine (1-5 ug/kg/min IV), Epinephrine (5-10 ug/kg IV), and Halothane (1-2% inhaled). ... The lab is to determine the effects of the listed pharmacolgic drugs on cardiac output of dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital (25 mg/kg IV).
