OSU ILACUC - Protocols, Animals, and Experimentation
January 2005.
Nineteen (19) new protocols have been reviewed so far this year.
Fourteen amendment approvals to currently active protocols, some active back to 1999. The amendments modify current procedures and use additional animals.
00A0108 - add 520 mice to expand studies of the role of proteins in mediating
cell survival
01A0063 - add 18 dogs to test implantable lead devices
2003A0042 - add 850 mice to study human natural killer cell development
2004A0105 - add 160 rabbits to obtain a more comprehensive picture of intracellular calcium handling.
Note: these animals numbers are not added into the OSU Animal Usage chart.

A veterinarian observation will be conducted to "observe the first several
animals and report back to the Committee (ILACUC) regarding possible long term
effects of daily anesthesia."

2005A0018 - Ventral Hippocampal Lesions as an Animal Model of Schizophrenia - John Bruno - Pain Code = 5D
This is NOT a new model but a standard method used in rats.
Only male rat offspring will be used in this experiment. Any females born from breeding rats will be killed.
A veterinarian observation will be conducted to "observe the first several neonatal euthanasia procedures and report back to the Committee (ILACUC) regarding the appropriateness of hypothermia as an anesthetic considering the length of time required to complete the procedures.
