48 hours later and OSU chimp is dead in Texas

KERMIT

POET does NOT have a photograph as

OSU has removed all links to the Chimp Center

The photograph of Kermit was provided by a supporter - thank you.

Kermit and Darrell, another primate, had been together since they arrived at OSU in May 1983. Sally Boysen can obviously say alot more about than me about Kermit. This is the story of what happened at the Chimp Center from February 21 to March 2nd.

Feb 21, Tuesday afternoon and OSU calls Sally Boysen into a meeting. During the meeting OSU ULAR staff and security storm the lab ----

"scattered throughout the building, and changed ALL the locks, and took all keys away from my two full-time staff members. They have also NOT PERMITTED my staff to ANSWER THE PHONE for the last 4 days. At least one University police car & officer have been stationed there around the clock since Tuesday.
On Wednesday morning, the first time I attempted to go to the Center, I was ordered by a University police officer to "REMAIN IN YOUR CAR"...after which he "called for back-up", and about 3 minutes later, a second car arrived, and the patrolman's CAPTAIN ordered me off the property."

The OSU Lantern did not report the story all week The first Lantern story appears on March 1st.

Monday, Feb. 27, and the chimps are packed up and set to leave. Their planned departure time delayed as Sally Boysen and other supporters chained themselves to the departure gate. As the media told the story on the evening news OSU continued to make plans to move the primates to Texas.

Researcher loses court case; OSU chimps moving to Texas
The protesters removed their chains as evening turned to dusk. It's cold, it's dark and protestors have been there since late afternoon when the truck hauling a horse-like trailer begins to exit the OSU lab center. Police lights flashing as an escort the trailer turns onto Godown Road and the chimps are no longer at The Ohio State University.
"They will go nonstop to Texas," said Dr. William Yonushonis, Director of University of Laboratory Animal Resources.

On the evening news Earle Holland says, "simply unfair to the rest of the research community to continue to underwrite a facility like this."

That's right pay your per diem rates or lose your animals!

So i watch the internet for news of the chimps arrival. Twenty-four hours pass and nothing on the internet. During this time OSU removes all links to Sally's work from public access. (hence no photo of Kermit) I send emails to two San Antonio television stations requesting they cover the chimp arrivals at Primarily Primates. No word. It is now Thursday evening. Alittle more than 48 hours after the chimps have left OSU and this ...

FOX TV News at 10 PM just announced that the alpha male in Sally's group is dead.

Kermit was knocked down (under anesthetic) at Wally's - Primarily Primates - because the transport cage wouldn't fit into the enclosure. Wally and the "vet" left him alone, came back and he was dead. We have also heard that Wally placed two of the younger chimps in an enclosure that already had two chimps -- no quarantine, no introduction -- nothing. This is what we've heard.

And the OSU spin is:
The 300 lb chimp named Kermit was sedated to effect the transfer and his head fell forward blocking his breathing. The attendants did everything they could to revive him. The VP of Research (McGrath) said the attendants did nothing wrong. Two OSU vets are on their way down to San Antonio to inspect the other eight chimps who are reported to be doing very well. They will also perform an autopsy on Kermit to confirm the cause of death.

The story continues ...

This sounds like every other story OSU has told when primates were "found dead" under their care. The stories we could tell. Well, WE WILL!
