More Cats and More Money
Our fears have come true. The "cats on meth" experiment has received more cats.
While we gather further information here's the facts as they stand today - September 14, 2004.
The Mathes/Neff NIDA grant is in it's fifth and final year and received funding.
2003 = $331,875
2004 = $295,000
Upon receipt of the 2004-2005 NIDA grant application we found information concerning experimental results were redacted.

OSU administration and OSU animal care will not answer the question that activists have been asking since November 2002. Will you be using more cats for this experiment?
More on that story by reading the "Open Letter to President Holbrook".
Here is a quote from Mathes which from all the other evidence leads to our conclusion that cats are being used.
"Some cats may be used in the fourth or fifth year of the study to verify
cell-culture results, Mathes said. But he said far fewer than 120 cats will
be needed."
Dispatch, November 1, 2002
Mathes protocol 02A0047
received approval to continue for it's 3rd year in February 2005. Last month
we received the approval and attached was an e-mail providing further evidence
that cats are again being used in this experiment. The e-mail notes that the
cats were ordered under the wrong protocol and should have been ordered under
02A0047. Those are the cats received on 8/02/04.
Protocol 02A0047 was 96A0038, the protocol which allowed Podell to conduct his pilot study for cats-on-meth. We still don't know how that was allowed but no matter.
As well, the NIDA grant which was to expire in 2005 now has a 2006 date, so it appears the funding has been extended another year.
The extension of the grant did not involve any funding. The project has ended!. We await to see a published paper.
