Non-Human Primate Usage at OSU

Squirrel Monkey - Rhesus Macaque - Crab-eating Macaque

The 2006 USDA Annual Report reports 26 primates on hand at the end of the reporting period. The number of primates used at the university continues to decline from 38 primates in 2005 and 77 in 2004. The decrease from 2004 was due in part to the "terminal blood draw" on October 26, 2004 where killed 16 squirrel monkeys for protocol 2003A0026. It took POET over a year to receive the medical records for these primates! Atleast 16 of the other primate deaths are verified as being killed in protocol 02A0162.

There were no new primate protocols in 2006, but that doesn't mean no new primates arrived or that none were used. There are three animal researchers who used primates in 2006, Rajab, Buford, and Danford. Descriptions of the protocols are below but a short summary shows that Danford received five (5) primates from Worldwide Primates in October 2006. In January 2007, all the primates were shipped to the University of Minnesota. Rajab received six (6) primates from Covance in September 2006. As of January 8, 2007, five (5) were alive following experimental procedures and one died of cardiac arrest while in surgery.

The Ohio State University reported to USDA in 2004 that seventy-seven (77) non-human primates were used in a variety of experiments at OSU. 2004 shows the highest number of primates reported since 1996, when 102 primates were used.

The 2004 USDA Annual Report, which include the period from October 1, 2003 to September 30, 2004, that twelve(12) non-human primates were used in experiments where no pain, distress, or use of pain-relieving drugs is required. Sixty-five (65) non-human primates were involved in experiments where pain or distress is part of the experiment, however pain relieving drugs are provided to the animals.
