OSU Animals in the Laboratory
3 - 2 -1 Happy New Year!
Death didn't take a holiday at The Ohio State University in December, as two beagles lives were ended to test bronchodilators. Received from Battelle on December 19, the dogs, ided as 4340361-killed 12/31/03- and 4355067-killed 12/30/03- were just two of the 48 dogs approved for use in this study. The P.I., Robert Hamlin, is working to develop a model of asthma (bronchonstriction) in dogs. He is using three drugs which are already approved for treatment. This study is collecting data comparing tracheal reactivity to bronchoreactivity is being worked under protocol 02A0166 approved December 9, 2002.
The last dogs to arrive at OSU were 6 foxhounds from the Class B dealer, Robert Perry which arrived December 29, 2003.. The dogs were ordered by Dr. Billman for protocol, 00A0053.
Concerning the treatment of the animals, the numbers of animals used, and the protocols approved to use animals there is nothing uplifting to report as 2003 came to an end.
And how has 2004 started. Worse. In the first two months three new protocols have already been approved which will not provide relief from pain and/or distress for the animals.
World Week for Animals in Laboratories will be observed April 17th April 25th. Local events are currently being planned. Please plan to attend as you are the only one who can speak up for the animals. They sit in their cages every day each awaiting the same fate as Hamlins' beagles - death.
Be there for them.
