SPENCERVILLE - Four members of a Columbus animal rights group protested outside a Spencerville business for about 90 minutes Monday. Rob Russell, director of Protect Our Earth's Treasures, said they drove from Columbus to protest outside Springborn Laboratories because they felt the company was using "appalling" methods of testing animals. Russell said the group has a problem with the company's tests on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on pesticides and industrial chemicals. "A lot of their testing can be changed. There are alternatives to everything that they do," Russell said. "They don't need to use animals for those particular types of tests."
Dr. Joseph Siglin, general manager of Springborn, said the company is proud of its role in assessing the safety of important new drugs and chemicals.
"It is a highly controlled industry that we work in. We have to meet a whole variety of animal welfare regulations," Siglin said. "We do toxicology research here, but it is all for the purpose of improving and enhancing human and animal life and protecting the environment. It is all required."

ROB RUSSELL IS THE DIRECTOR OF A COLUMBUS-BASED GROUP KNOWN AS PROTECT OUR EARTH'S TREASURES...HE SAYS THE LAB IS PAID BY THE EPA TO STUDY THE EFFECTS OF THE CHEMICALS ON ANIMALS, BUT HE SAYS IT'S INFORMATION THAT HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR YEARS AND IS SIMPLY PRODUCING THE SAME RESULTS OVER AND OVER...HE SAYS MUCH OF THE TESTING BEING DONE AT SPRINGBORN IS OUTDATED AND WAS ONCE DETAILED ON THEIR WEBSITE, BUT DISAPPEARED AFTER REPEATED INQUIRIES WERE MADE FROM THE GROUP... THE GROUP CLAIMS SPRINGBORN LABORATORIES HAS RECEIVED 34 MILLION IN TAXPAYER DOLLARS FROM THE U.S. EPA TO FORCE-FEED MASSIVE DOSES OF PESTICIDES AND INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS TO ANIMALS.
